MANY MEN DON’T REALLY KNOW WHAT IS MEANT BY THE WORD “IMPOTENCE”

There’s Reuben, for example, a spry retired military man who’s taken such good care of himself over the years that he passes for 70 even though he’s pushing 86. He’s active and involved with many things—not the least of which is romance. But still he showed up at a clinic worried about his love life. And unlike some men, who have difficulty discussing such matters, Reuben wasn’t interested in small talk. He got right to the point: “I’m worried about not being able to get an erection sometimes,” he told his doctor. “I have three girlfriends, and I usually visit each one a couple of times a week.” While many men would envy this performance record, Reuben found himself unable to make love as often as he wanted. He was afraid his body might be “giving out’ on him.

As it turned out, there was nothing wrong with Reuben or the way his body was working. Far from it, in fact. At 85 he was able to have intercourse quite often. His only problem was that he wanted his body to function a little better than most men of any age can rightfully expect. He’s a good example of a man with unrealistic expectations worrying unnecessarily about erection. And he’s not unusual. Many men don’t really know what is meant by the word “impotence.”
